Ok, so right now I have my 12" ibook dual booting os x 10.4 and debian 3.1 ... I know, I know, it's not gentoo, but this is the only decent linux on ppc forum that I have run into. On a side note, the debian community sucks, you post a message on their forum and the anwser is allways file a bug report. Anyways, Everything is cool except that I have no sound and my video is a bit screwed up. It's set to 800x600 res on a 12.1" screen which is unbearbale. When I try to set the resolution to 1024x768 I get this funky static all throughout my screen but I can allmost make out what is being displayed...like old school scrambled porn...yeah. I'd like to fix that, anyone know what might be causing that? Any help you could provide me with would be awesome.

To be honest the reason I didn't put gentoo on there at this point is that I honestly don't have the time. The debian install took a grand total of 30 minutes and took almost no effort on my part. Right now I'm taking a calc class, working a full time job, try to work on some open source projects, and still remaining a hardcore drunk which is a lot to pack into everyday.

try ubuntu maybe?
i know Gentoo and Ubuntu are the best supported..
also Yellow Dog linux is very easy...
for the sound try activating ALSA in you kernel this way:

Stage 3 install to the rescue  That will use binary packages for the installation, so you should be able to finish a stage 3 install fairly quickly. Once you've got it up and running, keeping it up to date does need you to start the process, but you don't need to babysit the machine while it's compiling away.

Mmmmk well tell you what. I'll trow on a stage 3 gentoo install this weekend and write an objective analysis of the two installs. Sounds like fun to me.

the hassle is just a lot of reading and writing... but at the end most of the stuff will be compatible.
again if u have any problems just ask
Btw what graphic card do u have, if u have an nvidia in xorg.conf in the "Device" section try putting "nv" as driver. This enabled 2d acc for me, and the computer is much much faster... just a reminder. |

Great! But installing is one thing. The actual benefits of gentoo are easy maintenance and flexibility. Most people don't need to install all that often and gentoo is not orientated on beginners so the install procedure is not as slick as those of other distributions. But then debian was not very sophisticated in that eiter. That may have changed with 3.1 though. I wouldn't know, since I haven't seen 3.1 (and probably won't either )

I know the install isn't for beginers I've done stage one's on two x86 boxes at home it's just that if I install gentoo I rather do a stage one and that takes some time that I don't feel I have right now. I have the ati 9200 radeon mobility 32mb card btw. Any ideas why changing the resolution would have that effect or what I could try to do to remidy the situation untill I have time to throw gentoo on there? Also thanks for all the posts...I love how the people here don't have the my distro is better than your distro RTFM n00b attitude. As always, thanks for the help.

Sorry, not really. I don't have an ibook. I don't know what kernel debian ships with 3.1, but I know recent kernels (2.6.11 and 2.6.12 rc) have a number of bugfixes for ppc and iirc for the radeon driver as well. Other than that, search the forums and drop by on irc in #gentoo-ppc. Possibly someone there can help you.

i would try using 2.6.10 thats what im using...
and X try xorg instead of xfree
just an advice :/ |

| It seemed to me xfree was not supported anymore and you had to upgrade to xorg, no ? |
