I'm having some lockup issues under gentoo 2005.0 ( kernel 2.6.11-r9 ). it usually happens when I am running emerge (console or X running) and xmms/mpg123 and the timing varies, sometimes half hour, sometimes more. I can't move the mouse, kill X, or SSH into it, Hard reboot only. I'm using the ati-drivers and nforce-audio (intel8x0 sounds like crap on my machine). I have disabled ALSA in the kernel and have OSS and intel8x0 built as modules but don't use them. emerged kde with aRts disabled. At first I thought it was due to sound, but now I'm just confused and don't know where to begin troubleshooting. The reasons below make me wonder if this is a hardware issue/Resourse Conflict.

Thank you in advance to anyone willing to help.

Side note, I had tried to install SUSE, Fedora, and Mandrake, before Gentoo only to get a lockup when trying to load SiI3112 module during boot, Says something about "IRQ 11 nobody cares". Knoppix and Phlak wouldn't startup either, same reason.

Setup:
Asus A7N8X deluxe
Athlon-xp 2800+
2 x 512 MB Crucial PC-3200
ATI AIW Radeon 9600 Pro 8x AGP
2 x 80 GB Maxtor SATA-150 on SiI3112 (onboard)
1 x 160 GB Maxtor SATA-150 on Promise TX2-plus (PCI)
Plextor DVD-RW
Pioneer DVD-ROM

still nothing, locks up. Although I was able to use Phlak, Knoppix and Suse without crashing after I disconnected the 2 hard drives connected to the SiI3112. :?
