splashutils not working.....[SOLVED]

Here we go:

All kernel options configuired properly as per http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash

emerged splashutils , ok.

I made the initrd file, put into /boot, configured grub.conf

But nothing happens

I do get the nice vesafb bootup with the tux icon in the top left......

Any ideas?

BTW, I'll post my actual configs later, but I followed the wiki EXACTLY......

I only got it partly working myself. Get the small text, didn't do the logo this time, by never get the splash.
Funny thing is when shutting down it does work and even the progress bar.

Works fine on my x86 system.

Hmmm, lots of views, little replies. Does anyone here have splashutils working on 2005.0 with amd64?

If so, can you post your grub.conf etc etc .....

The package wasnt even masked, so in theory the splashutils should work, yes?

It works fine on my amd 64 laptop (2005.0, gentoo-sources 2.6.11-r5). I followed french howto

I didn't need to add splash to a runlevel (anyway I don't think this can help, since the initrd loading is much earlier)

I GOT IT!

After much tinkering, I think I found out the problem:
I had two video drivers enabled in kernel (VESA and Radeon)...
I had bootup logo enabled.

I removed radeon support (but 3d accel still works in KDE)....

I disabled bootup logo, and now the splash works!

-For AMD64 vesafb-tng or whatever it is - is not supported. You do not have to pass any extra options like video= or ywrap and pimpal - You only have to add vga=xxxx - followed by the theme options.

-rivaFB conflicts with nvidia-kernel so dont use it - vesafb is what you enable in the kernel - and to pass a resolution option to vesaFB you only need to add the vga=XXXX option.

-I think X86 users are complicating the issue (no offence guys) - There is no tng support on amd64 so be careful in what direction to steer people in.

-That user with video= and vga= is only going to run into problems - use one or the other. If your kernel supports vesa-tng you will be able to choose from that or vesafb. All amd kernels should only have vesafb as an option.

-Tng is broken on amd64, if you configure an x86 kernel you will notice a tng option - thats when you use those extra kernel options, then and only then.

-To be able to pass that vga=0x317 (for 1024 resolution) "video mode selection support" must be enabled in kernel.

-If I was at home right now I would give you my config's - Let me know how you go and later I can help.

Well I seriously do not know what else to do. I have followed a dozen or more guides and nothing yields results, not even a single change in my bootup. Now that I read this post I removed the video and resolution settings and still no go. Tell me what I need to post for you guys to solve this problem, I have gone through the kernel options many times and also compiled it many times. Just to note in my case the machine boots perfectly but normal no gensplash or anything.

My hardware:

AMD64 3200+
GA-K8NF-9 nforce4 motherboard
gigabyte 6600gt graphics card

If anyone has similar hardware can they post their configs? Is there any possibility it could be a flag setting problem?

Just so I know from your grub which one is the correct one? As you said you have many tests there?
Also from the .config do we actually need RIVA? You compiled it as a module though, or do we just stick to VESA?

Thanks for that but with a little bit of messing around I have come to the conclusion that my framebuffer is not working at all. I have no /dev/fb0 or fb... nothing by that matter. Can you check if you have these. This might be causing the problem for me. Hmm...

Ok I have found the "solution", and I am not sure if I should feel stupid or negligent or both at the same time but when I went to the boot directory I realised that the "vmlinuz" file didn't point to my newest kernel. I know how embarrassing. Maybe I was to concentrated on the problem that I neglected the obvious. Sorry guys.

Anyway thanks BlauwVoet for the grub config that did help.

Hey I've got problems with gensplash too. Studying this thread it seems that none of you use the new "vesafb-tng" framebuffer, is that right? Maybe that's the problem. I'll try and switch back to the old "vesafb".

My problem was AMD64 specific and if you have one than vesafb-tng doesn't work for 64-bit architectures. Tell us exactly whats the problem so we can help.

I see for getting something nice, sometimes you have to kill yourself!
I have problems with splash too. Here is my active thread but seems to not solve this issue.

I have an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe with AMD +3200 and nVidia 6600GT video Card.

If someone has this specific hardware specs, please post the following:
1) only the Device section of kernel .config
2) grub.conf
3) version of gentoo
4) what specific steps you followed (step by step)

I have a similar problem with gensplash...

I had everything working, but then upgraded to the 2.6.12 kernel and things started acting funny. I went back to 2.6.10 but it's still the same.

I'm on AMD64, and have the beautiful 2005.0 livecd theme installed. Bootup is great, with the fade-in in all its glory. However after bootup is complete. I'm left with a black screen (no graphics) but do have a space left at the bottom where the status bar should be.
Switching over to TTY2 and TTY6, I have all the graphics left over from the splash, but the terminals are unusable. (graphics only,, I can't see anything I type..)

I've tried messing with the settings in /etc/conf.d/splash, and tried adding splash to the runlevel, but it didn't make any difference. Also, I had my /etc/conf.d/rc set to 7 ttys, I changed it back to 12 but still only have ttys 1-6.(Not sure if this is related..I really don't need 11 ttys anyway so I really don't care if this gets fixed or not..)
