|
|
I have a FreeBSD box running Samba 3. I have all of my mp3s on it and am sharing them via samba. All of my computers can play the mp3s (including this one) with out any problem. However, XMMS can see the files but when I double click on them or select "Add a files in directory" nothing happens (nothing is listed in the Playlist Editor. I have the Samba share mounted via LinNeighborhood and no other program shows any limitations with accessing the files (amaroK even works).
Has anyone seen this before? |

Oh boy, another one - what part of xmms is unsupported software ?
You should recompile xmms with samba support. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

How do I recompile with Samba support. I already have "samba" in my use flags. What else do I need to do to compile XMMS with Samba support? |

Well, first of all, verify that xmms actually has samba support:
If xmms uses KIOslaves instead then maybe the problem is related to that. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Oh, ok. After I emerged samba, unmerged XMMS, and re-emerged it, it can now play the shared mp3s. This whole time I have had "samba" in my use flags. Should it have emerged samba the first time I installed XMMS on my system? |

If it was, at that time, in your USE flags, yes it should have. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Code: | #emerge xmms -pv
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r15 +3dnow +alsa -arts +debug -directfb -esd +flac -jack -lirc +mad +mikmod +mmx +mp3 +nls -oss -sndfile +vorbis 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 0 kB |
There's no samba mentioned there. So your xmms executable all along had the ability to play shared files. Only you didn't have samba installed so there was no way to access the share.
And adaptr's statement that USE="samba" should cause samba to be installed isn't true. I don't have kde installed but kde is in my USE flags. USE flags allow for individual programs to offer support based on that other program but doesn't neccessarily mean the other one will be installed. It can mean "if you've got that program installed, I can interface with it" rather than "I will force that other program to be installed." |

Sure, whatever you say.
Looky here:
Yes, a program that has an "xyz" USE flag set will most certainly emerge xyz if that package is needed to actually provide that support.
With samba, this is not the case, since the client part is built into the kernel - or not.
I was going on his words, which indicate a relation between xmms and the samba package.
Apparently, there isn't one - how should I have guessed that ?
Since xmms does not even have a samba flag, the ability to access samba shares will be built regardless.
Or it detects and uses KIOslaves for everything if you have them installed - who knows ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

That's correct. I was just trying to avoid any possible confusion. There could be someone who says "Why do I have gnome in my USE flags and gnome isn't installed? Shouldn't it be?" |
