I downloaded the Minimal 2005.0 ISO and burnt it to a CD and attempted to install Gentoo on this IBM machine. As the system booted the CD the drive stopped reading it after a second and stayed idle.

I'd guess that this port is predominately supporting Macintosh PPC computers, how much PReP support is there as well? Should booting the CD on this system have the same ease as a Macintosh (or others like Amiga machines) or would I be booting from floppies (like Debian)? I'm installing this via serial console.

Should there be some Open Firmware commands I should be aware of to boot it properly?

Thanks,

Simon

EDIT: I followed the guide on this site: http://www.solinno.co.uk/7043-140/walkthrough/firstboot/ got to booting the floppy but it kept throwing errors at me. I used this image: http://www.solinno.co.uk/7043-140/files/2.6.9-rc2-bk5/zImage.prep thinking it was the 'latest' release. Now, I'm stuck on what to load at the 'Linux/PPC load:' prompt. The default load options didn't work:

Code:

I followed what was said in http://www.solinno.co.uk/7043-140/walkthrough/firstboot/, which gives me:

Code:
Linux/PPC load: root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=128000 video=s3trio:off console=ttyS0
Uncompressing Linux...done.
Now booting the kernel

Thing is, I don't have one! I tried changing the option from 'root=/dev/sda3' to 'root=/dev/scd0' :

Code:
Linux/PPC load: root=/dev/scd0 load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=128000 video=s3trio:off console=ttyS0
Uncompressing Linux...done.
Now booting the kernel

Now I'm stumped. I've changed it from scd0 to sr0:

Code:
Linux/PPC load: root=/dev/sr0 load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=128000 video=s3trio:off console=ttyS0
Uncompressing Linux...done.
Now booting the kernel

I've tried every init= option to no avail. As a newbie to PPC PReP Linux installs, I have no idea what to do now.

I downloaded the boot and root disks for the latest release of Debian install and the boot disk never worked. The root disk in conjunction with the above 2.6 boot disk ended with:

Code:
Linux/PPC load: root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=128000 video=s3trio:off console=ttyS0

I ended up getting a Debian Woody root disk from http://krichard.web.elte.hu/43p-140/ where I had better success where I could go through with the install process (to an extent, can't finish it) and access and partition hard drives but I could not get to run the install on the Gentoo CD. I even got the Universal PPC CD and it gave me the same results.

I'm about to scrap the disks and trying to make my own disks. Only thing is, I don't have a clue how to! But I gotta learn somehow. So here's some questions:

I would have to compile a kernel for the boot and root disks, how is that done?

I also have a PowerMac G3 Beige with MacOS 10.2 (Developers Tools Dec. 2002). Will that compile a Linux kernel compatible with the 7043-140?

Will it matter if it is based on kernel version 2.4 or 2.6?

If a PReP-specific boot disk can successfully install a Gentoo installation from the CD, can a modified LiveCD have it incorporated in the boot area of the CD-ROM doing away with the floppy? If that's the case, is it plausible to have it integrated with the mainstream Gentoo PPC release CDs? It could enable us RS/6000 users to install Gentoo with the same ease as our Macintosh counterparts.

I'm pretty convinced that if I can boot the CD properly, I can install it without any problems. I aim to get the floppy to load the appropriate drivers (such as SCSI and squashfs) and have it load the CD (whether by boot load option or automatically).

If anyone could help me with the above, it would be greatly appreciated.
