Due to problems getting my internet(VPN) setup i decided to try and run gentoo in vmware(use as hdd the entyre real hdd and it boots any OS on your hdd, cool thing). I've used NAT with some live distros in vmware and i had instant internet acces. Now with gentoo the problem is it was already installed and setup so now when i run it in vmware it no longer has the old netowrk, so how do i set it up to use vmware's network? cos ifconfig dose not return any network devices except lo.
I need this so i can get everything installed and than hopefuly i'll get internet working when runing gentoo native not in vmware.
EDIT:
I think i saw something about compiling the kernel to be kinda like the one that the instalation cd boots, so it would detect hardware at startup just like the livecd. I'm thinking this should work(since internet worked withouth doing any settings with other live distros). What do u guys think? |

I would think enabling the standard networking drivers would give you vmware support, but I'm not sure. You may have a working driver, but the interface just isn't up.
Now--assuming you have a working driver:
If you're running a DHCP server on your host machine, listening on the vmware interface, then all you need to do is modify /etc/conf.d/net in the virtual machine to treat eth0 as dhcp. If you don't have the DHCP server running, you'll need to manually enter your DNS servers in resolv.conf, and set up the host vmware interface as the default gateway in /etc/conf.d/net, and also specify IP info for eth0 there.
This is assuming you have the virtual machine's networking set up as NAT--if it's bridged, then you need to do whatever you did with your main machine to get it on the net.
Once it's configured, just /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start and add net.eth0 to startup. |
