Is the error message i get.
I entered emerge system and im using hte universal cd |

| I guess You didn't unpack the portage snapshot. Have a look at the Gentoo Handbook Chapter 5.d how to get that right. |

Read the handbook first. There's a plain text copy on the cd. Then if you still can't find a solution search the forums first. Chances are good your problem has already been solved by/for somebody else who ran into it too.
