input/output error in accessing one dir on an ntfs partition

For some reason I'm getting a generic input/output error when trying to access a certain directory on my ntfs partition through gui apps (and the command line as well). the dir is there, and all the other files/dirs in the folder seem to be there, but it just wont let me open this one dir (which happens to be one I need dearly). I've just mounted this whole ntfs drive for the first time (I'm recovering data from this HD after lightening destroyed my machine), but everything else seems to be intact completely. Any ideas why one dir would be giving me problems?
