This is strictly from a "user" standpoint, so...

Overall I think that emerge works well. Its command lines are reasonably intuitive, and the debug output works pretty well, however... I find that --search always bothers me, along with info display on what is blocking what and how to fix it.

I'll try to summarize...
1) emerge -s "kde theme" - search for 2 terms (AND)
2) clarify --searchdesc (does it search the normal, or only desc?)
3) easy way to restrict search, update, etc (ie --base x11-themes/)
4) provide more info on what is blocking, and possibly why (and how to fix?). Same goes for masks
5) maybe adding key words to packages that might not be in the description?
6) search for packages that depend on something else ? --search "themes" -dependon "kde"

When I search I usually want to search for multiple words, just like any search engine. That is my daily interaction with every search utility I use, and so it would be nice have emerge work this way by default? I know that regexes are nice, but what I *expect* is the simple normal search. I have not needed to use a regex to search yet, but I am sure others do all the time ;)

Also, is there a decent gentoo package manager with categorization, etc? I haven't been able to find anything yet, and as wonderful as finding stuff using the command line and the website it, it's quite a pain if I don't know *exactly* what I want.

Thanks,
Andrew

That does not strictly answer your question, as you seem to look for a better search using emerge, but here are my 2c.

gentoo-portage.com is a great way to crawl inside the huge amount of applications in Portage. If you never stopped by, go !
