Ncurses Problem

After installing the System packages during the Gentoo Linux 1.4RC2 installation I went onto configure my kernel
emerge --usepkg sys-kernel/gentoo-sources went fine but when I ran "make menuconfig" I got an error saying that I
didn't have the Ncurses libraries installed so I decided to run emerge --usepkg ncurses all went well intill I tryed to run
make menuconfig again... About 4 trys later it still wouldn't work. Is there a solution to this problem I am having?
Please help
