Everything seems to be up and running. I am glad to be switching back to Gentoo.
However, I am running into two problems to which I cannot figure out.
1> When I first boot, everything looks fine and dandy. However, the
first time I switch to another virtual console with the usual ctrl-alt Fx
sequence, everything gets darker. Even the original console. It
is almost as if the brightness level on my monitor jumped down to
half level.
2> I cannot remember the solution to this one, I know I have done this before. How do I set agetty to clear the screen when it is relaunched. ie logout, initial boot?
Just some specs here --
I am running 2.6.3-gentoo-rc1 from the the gentoo emerge gentoo-dev-sources.

I've no idea about the first question, but for number 2 you could just add clear to the end of your .bash_logout and your .bash_profile scripts. |

Well....
I found the solution to the fade issue on console/virtual consoles...
Discovered it when I was recompiling the kernel for security issues and failed to re-install the modules -- I was really tired then.
It turns out that hotplug was automatically loading the framebuffer modules for my ATI Rage 128. This module was the problem. |

Ok, your inittab should have lines like this:
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -I '\033[2J\033[f' 38400 tty1 linux
and when you change it, issue this command to activate the changes:
telinit q
