Everything seems to be up and running. I am glad to be switching back to Gentoo.

However, I am running into two problems to which I cannot figure out.

1> When I first boot, everything looks fine and dandy. However, the
first time I switch to another virtual console with the usual ctrl-alt Fx
sequence, everything gets darker. Even the original console. It
is almost as if the brightness level on my monitor jumped down to
half level.

2> I cannot remember the solution to this one, I know I have done this before. How do I set agetty to clear the screen when it is relaunched. ie logout, initial boot?

Just some specs here --

I am running 2.6.3-gentoo-rc1 from the the gentoo emerge gentoo-dev-sources.

Video card: ati rage 128, 16MB

I've no idea about the first question, but for number 2 you could just add clear to the end of your .bash_logout and your .bash_profile scripts.

Well....

I found the solution to the fade issue on console/virtual consoles...

Discovered it when I was recompiling the kernel for security issues and failed to re-install the modules -- I was really tired then.

It turns out that hotplug was automatically loading the framebuffer modules for my ATI Rage 128. This module was the problem.

Ok, your inittab should have lines like this:

c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -I '\033[2J\033[f' 38400 tty1 linux

and when you change it, issue this command to activate the changes:

telinit q

Bye.
