I've been using dbus/hal to automount cds/dvds and its been working good, now I want to try something else. I just got kde to show icons on the desktop when a cds put in now I'm wondering if there's a way to make mplayer start up when a dvds mounted. Any idea where to start?

first of all, you don`t need to mount dvds to play the movies

i recommend using ivman, it can recognise the content of an insterted disc and launch any related application

Do you mean when you put a dvd in the cdplayer mplayer will start? There is an option in gnome/xfce maybe kde but I don't use it that will allow you to do that. I have it so totem starts with dvds/cds and k3b starts with cd-rws and blank cdrs.
