I need to build an image for a system with limited disk and resources. Would really like to use Gentoo to create this image because all of the packages I need are in portage and I can optimize the binaries this way. It's an x86 system, so I'm thinking I'll compile the system on a more powerful machine, then put the image (without portage to conserve space) onto the target system. Is this type of thing documented somewhere? Anything else I should be considering?

lookup the howtos for live cds for general guide lines. you will be able to build a way more specific kernel, but the basics are the same: create an environment you can chroot into, pretend to be installing on the system you are targeting for, transfer that environment to the target. |

Good idea - this is indeed similar to a LiveCD install. Thanks for the help. |
