Step by step how do I get the fb set to 1680x1050 so that I can have a nice splash screen on boot.
I have a DELL Ipnspiron 8600 with a ATI Radeon 9600 [M10 RV350] with a 1680x1050 [WSXGA+] screen
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync

To generate vesa modeline you cant just try gtf, which is part of xorg.

gtf 1680 1050 173 |
Which mean , get the xorg modline for 1680x1050 at 173 KHz. I don't know why 173, but il works better. I found this by running fbset when using vesatg set to 1680x1050. |
Do you mean we can set splash screen to 1680x1050 that way? It would be great. |
Yes, it works with vesafbtg, but I found it too small. Right now I'm removed fb since I'm using snapshot DRI with XFree86 4.5.0, and this dri dirve flush vesafb mtrr table |

O.k.I'm not an expert in this but I am using an inspiron 9300, ATI X300 and a 17in. WXGA display. I accidentally got this to work.
I'm assuming you are using GRUB, if you're using LILO I don't think this will help.
First off in my kernel:
Device Driver --->
Graphics Support --->
[*] Support for Frame Buffer Devices
<*> VESA VGA Graphics Support
VESA Driver Type (vesafb-tng) --->
(1024x767@60) VESA default mode
Console display driver support --->
[*] Video Mode selection support
<*> Framebuffer Console support
[*] Backlight & LCD device support --->
<*>Lowlevel Backlight controls
<*>Lowlevel LCD controls
[*] Support for the framebuffer spash
I have nothing else selected under "Graphics Support"
Now here's my grub:
default 0
timeout 10
splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.11-r11
root (hd0,1)
kernel /gentoo-2.6.11-r11 root=/dev/sda5 resume2=swap:/dev/sda3 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr vga=0f07
The key here is in the vga= portion... I actually had something completely wrong... When I booted, I would get a menu
asking me to select a resolution (out of about 6 possibilites) Once I found the one that worked, I just popped it into my vga=
Hope this helps |
