My /usr/portage/distfiles dir is taking up a log of diskspace (~700M). I see it consists of only the downloaded archives. Is it safe to delete these once I'm through with a merge? |

Mine is 1375MEG
You can clean the distfiles directory if you wish, the only problem that it can cause is if you decide at a later date to re-merge that package, or like in the case of certain packages, patches are applied to move up releases, the you will need to re-download the package.
If its still small at 700 Meg you could always stick it on a CD |

Yes you can but if u ever need them again because of a patch or something, you'll have to download them all over again.
Anyway, I'm having a similar issue. I'm having loads of different versions of progs in my distfiles.
Like kde3 and kde3.1 and gnome2 and gnome2.2 and stuff like that. Is there any simple command to delete any packages from the distfiles of which a newer version is also present? _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz
