Corrently i am running software raid-1 on my 2 boot drives..
I am thinking about adding a hot spare drive to this set, can this hot spare be added on the already build raid set ?
Can i put the hot spare into sleep mode so it wont run unless needed ?? |

Sure, add the drive to your config, connect it to your system, and boot.
It's no different from replacing one when the array fails.

I don't see why not - check out the many topics about stopping a HD from spinning altogether.
