I've just formatted my entire hard disk and installed Gentoo after having used Mandrake 8.2 and then 9.0 for about half a year, and I must say that I am extremely impressed! Gentoo is so much faster, more stable and I have finally got rid of all those programs that I never use! One of Gentoo's most impressive feature has to be the "emerge" command, it's so cool to be able to get software this way!
Anyway, I was thinking of installing some MIDI editing software, software synths and other audio tools on my machine, but it doesn't seem that any have been added to Gentoo's emerge installer yet. I appreciate that it takes a lot of time and work to keep the available programs on emerge up to date, but I was wondering if there is any chance that software such as "muse", "rosegarden", "ardour", "audicity", "spiral-synth" etc. may become available through emerge in the future?
Thanks,
Martin _________________ Intel i7 3820 - 16GB Corsair DDR3 - GeForce GTX 660 2GB - SBLive - 13TB - Gentoo - KDE4 |

Both audacity and ardour are in the portage tree at the moment:
* media-sound/ardour-cvs [ Masked ]
Latest version available: 0.6
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 102 kB
Homepage: http://ardour.sourceforge.net/
Description: multi-track hard disk recording software
* media-sound/audacity
Latest version available: 1.1.1-r1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 2,256 kB
Homepage: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Description: Based on the eutils eclass
as for the others, I can't help I'm afraid.

Thanks, it looks like I spelled audacity wrong. _________________ Intel i7 3820 - 16GB Corsair DDR3 - GeForce GTX 660 2GB - SBLive - 13TB - Gentoo - KDE4 |

rosegarden is in portage, but masked by the ~x86 keywords.
I'm compiling it right now. I hope it works, since I've tried to compile it from the source before, without the ebuild and have failed. |

Thanks for that info! I didn't realise that RoseGarden was also there. I did already manage to compile it without the ebuild and so I already did get it working, and it's a pretty neat program.
The one thing that I'm still having a problem with is ardour. I used the ebuild for that one, but even though it does compile and appear to install correctly, the program doesn't run, complaining that it cannot find the pixmaps that are used for the GUI. I checked my drive and found them, so they are installed correctly. I guess I just need to update my configuration files. I suppose I'll try again at some point. _________________ Intel i7 3820 - 16GB Corsair DDR3 - GeForce GTX 660 2GB - SBLive - 13TB - Gentoo - KDE4 |

Warning: I built the thing, and it basically works (including ALSA MIDI output to SBLive), but it crashes about every 5 minutes in the notation editor.
