Hello Gentoo Users!

I just purchased and installed a BenQ DW1620 16X DVD+/-RW DL burner, but have not been able to successfully burn a disc. I originally tried Verbatim DVD-R 8X media with CDRecord-ProDVD, then the same media with growisofs. I then tried Memorex DVD+R 16X media and growisofs, with no success. Finally, I tried using Memorex 4X DVD+RW media. I was able to successfully format the disc with dvd+rw-format, but mkudffs failed.

In all of these cases, failure means sitting there indefinitely with the red light blinking. My system also completely hangs when this happens. I have let it run overnight and all day, with no success.

Under windows, everything works like a charm. All media types are supported. I have updated my firmware to the latest revision, B7V9.

I even formatted a +RW under Windows, mounted it under Linux (which was successful), and attempted to copy a file to it, unsuccessfully. Even creating a directory hangs the system.

I am running Kernel v.2.6.12.

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

I figured this one out and figured I'd post the results so that others don't waste days and long nights like I did. :( I was using the ide-scsi interface to my burner, which was crashing my system. As soon as I removed it and began using the /dev/hdc ATAPI interface, everything started working! What's great is that none of my disks were destroyed. The system simply wasn't writing anything to them, just sitting there blinking its light. The exception is the +RW, which was partially written, but fortunately was rewriteable. DVD+RW support still doesn't work the best, it tells me I'm out of space after using 80MB. Oh well, I'm sure it'll be fixed in the future.

You could try
Code:
dvd+rw-format /dev/hdc -force

I had the same problem way back with packet writing, and whats left of my notes showed I did the above.
Whether that was the fix I'm not 100% sure.. to use inCD formatted dvd's you'll need to configure packet-writing. There's a very long thread and a wiki about it.
Mvh
