I'm having problems with my raid5 array. It seems that some kernel bug has caused one of the drives to "fail", and get kicked from the array. Does anyone know how I can start the array up again without having to add the kicked drive and rebuild? (Which would take hours.) _________________ If we weren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made of meat? |

What makes you think it is a kernel bug?
And why not let the array rebuid in the background? (But you can force degraded mode by simply removing the faulty disk.) _________________ Donate to F/OSS |

Well, it's partly guessing and partly hoping. Being that I've lost 8 drives in a year in 4 different computers (three of which in the last month), I'm doing some intense hoping that not another drive is dying. Also, I've had my fair share of problems with the SATA drivers. (Satasil driver, that is.)

I could do that, but besides the fact that it probably will take more than 24 hours (6x250GB drives), my current luck with hard drives would ensure that one will fail when rebuilding the "failed" drive. Since I know the data on it should be OK, I'd prefer to just reassemble the complete array, and then run a resync on it. _________________ If we weren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made of meat? |

I should probably add that I don't really have a spare drive in my raid setup. My configuration uses all 6 drives, and the subject description refers to adding back the "failed" drive as a spare drive to rebuild. As it is now, it's running as degraded, which is rather risky. _________________ If we weren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made of meat? |
