CIFS support enabled in kernel but not available

Hi, ALL,
I have a very easy question.

I am using the 2.6.12-r4 kernel from gentoo-sources on x86 installation, and I would like to know what I should enable in order to get a CIFS support.
I turned the CIFS support on under "File System-> Network File System", but I don't have a file mount.cifs. So, my guess is, I didn't enable something very important in the kernel, that cifs depends on.

Please enlighten me.

CIFS tools come as part of SAMBA. It doesn't sound like you've emerged samba yet. Have you?

No, not yet.....

Tried to as a part of KDE dependency, but compilation of X failed. If you are interested, you could take a look at my thread in the "Desktop Environments" forum.

Hi, ALL,
Could anybody answer me, if I have to enable "smbfs support" AND "cifs support" or just the "cifs support" will be sufficient? I am asking because cifs support comes as part of Samba, and Samba support is coming out of smbfs.....

It's two parts, If you want to use SMBFS you have to enable it in the kernel, and you need samba installed, so that you have tools to work with smbfs (e.g. smbmount) the same goes for CIFS, if you want to access CIFS Shares (i.e. Shares on XP or 2003 Server) you will need to enable CIFS in the kernel and install samba so that you have the tools needed to work with CIFS. I don't think you need to enable smbfs support in the kernel if you are gong to only use cifs, but I'm not 100% sure. Why wouldn't you just use both anyhow? it's only 2 modules?
