What is needed to allow the system to immediately make use of changes in resolv.conf?

nothing, resolv.conf is referenced each time a lookup is made.

Thanks. That's what I though but was having trouble getting some changes to be effective. Finally noticed this line in the man page:

The domain and search keywords are mutually exclusive. If more than one instance of these keywords is present, the last instance wins.
and since the "search" keyword could take multiple entries I eliminated the "domain" keyword and all is now OK.
