I've installed Gentoo on my laptop.
When i boot from the LiveCD, i've a full screen console (when i'm not in X).
After booting from a self compiled kernel, the console is in a small space in the middle of the screen.

In Debian (run that before Gentoo), i had the same problem.
Is something missing in the kernel config?

I hope you understand my English ;)

What you're looking for is a framebuffer.
There's an excellent Tutorial for that at the gentoo wiki http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash

I think problem lies on how your laptop's video is setup.
To have the video like live cd, adding the vga parameter in /boot/grub/grub.conf would get what you want.
or you could also go into your laptop's bios and there is probably setting for streching to full screen or along those lines.

Whats really happening is that your display is defaulting to resolution of probably to 640x480 or 800x600 and obviously your laptop's screen is capable of displaying higher resolution.

Just for your reference my grub.conf file looks like:

Quote:

title AMD 02 June
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.11-hardened-r13 root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/sda3 init=/linuxrc vga=0x317 splash=verbose
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11-hardened-r13

notice in the kernel line i have a vga parameter which resizes the resolution for my console.
