Hi everbody,

I have installed Gentoo Linux 1.4 RC2 on a SUN Ultra60. I am running into problems configuring XFree86. I am using the sunffb driver in my XF86Config file. But somehow XFree86 is not able to detect the monitor. It is a SUN 21 inch monitor. I already started to play with the modelines in XF86Config, but with no success. Has anybody got a working XF86Config file which he can post here? I would really appreciate it!

best regards
Stefan

Stefan,

What was your install method? I ask because I have the same box, using the 1.1iso and 1.4 tarball. However, I could never get the network up.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

I have followed the Gentoo Sparc installation guide:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-install.xml

The installation method I used was CD based. I downloaded the image from here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/build/1.1a/gentoo-sparc-1.1a-r2.iso

The kernel provided by this CD has support for the onboard HappyMeal Ethernet interface of the SUN Ultra60. I can't remember whether you have to load it as module. If yes, then do a:

# modprobe sunhme

Or which type of network card are you using?

Some good information on installing on SPARC is also in this thread:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=26128

What exactly is the error message, when you try to bring up the network interface?

best regards
Stefan

Stefan,

I was able to get the network up off the cdrom, but the network wouldn't exist when I chrooted. I don't recall if I tried modprobe...I spent some time in IRC to get help at the time. Hmmm. I'll bring the box down and give it another go.

Joe,

After the chroot, did you check the network settings, with:
Code:
ifconfig -a
.
For me the network was still there after the chroot. Also make sure you have your nameserver ip address in /etc/resolv.conf:
Code:
search yourdomain.com
nameserver your.dns.ip.address

If you have any probs post them.
