Hello,

I was trying to make gentoo work with my sound and video chipsets, but it doest work. I'd love to have gentoo on my home-pc. Can it support my sound and video chipsets?

I have BIOSTAR motherboard P4VMA-M v2.3 http://www.biostar.com.tw/products/mainboard/board.php?name=P4VMA-M%20v2.3

INTEGRATED VIDEO: S3 UniChrome Pro (VIA PM800)
INTEGRATED AUDIO: C-Media CMI9761A 6-Channel AC97 CODEC (VIA VT8237/VT8327R)

I think you mean you're trying to make KERNEL work with your hardware... I have the same audio codec and I've never experienced any problems. I'm using:
Code:
<*> VIA 82C686A/B, 8233/8235 AC97 Controller

Are you sure you're using correct driver? Post your lspci output.

lspci recognises my audio chipset. but i hear no sound. alsamixer shows correct version and all arent muted.

PM800 works, but only 600x400 and 60HZ:-(

check what mode you've selected. I'm not using 6-channel mode for instance, so I had to disable some channels to get output from correct jack. Search for drivers from your card manufacturer (like from nvidia an ati), what is happening when you're trying to set up higher mode? I assume you're talking about Xserver...

Take a closer look at: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=26963&group_id=102048, http://myth.ivor.org/unichrome/, http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/lofiversion/index.php/t14324.html, http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=5&ArticleID=376 and http://www.linux-sxs.org/guis/DRIS3.html. I don't have any experience with S3/VIA grphics chipsets under Linux, but I think you should try to find proper driver for your card - maybe somewhere in portage (but when I've searched for S3 i've found only sys-apps/s3switch so probably you will need to find, download and compile the driver manually).

Maybe someone who has similiar card would be able to help you.
