|
|
Hi!
I just emerged X, configuerd it and tried to start it. Works fine. ( the ugly twm is coming up ).
emerged fluxbox ( written in this http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/fluxbox-config.xml howto)
emerged gdm (some gnome stuff came with it )
updated rc with
rc-update add xdm default
edited /etc/rc.conf -> Displaymanager="gdm"
rebooted my box. and wooohooo X says "cannot run with framebuffer please specify CID or sth like that. i stop X now"
so, ok back to console. logged in as root. startx [ENTER] and the twm i loading.
so ?????^10 arised over my head.
i have an radeon 8500. and emerged the ati-drivers. i also have radeonfb compiled in my kernel
if u want some conf files i hope i can support u with some. i just dont know how to copy from console to elinks.
thx hogan |

If you're going to start fluxbox with startx, put:
Code: |
exec /usr/bin/startfluxbox |
to your .xinitrc, which you create in your homedir.
For the loginmanager, I can't help you, since I'd never used one _________________ AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ AM2

gdm starts, but then X crashes.
i log in as root kill the gdm session with "kill" and start it manually. works so far but i cannto change to any VT's and cannot stop X anymore.
And X says at the beginning
Code: | Critical Error : Cannot run in Framebuffer, please specify a CID for every Framebuffer |
it it now X or GDM ? |

I had a similar problem with my laptop.
The radeonfb module and fglrx do not play nice. use vesafb instead.
Code: |
vga=0x343 video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap,vram=64
|
Thats what I have on my kernel line in grub.
I had to add the ",vram=64" to it to prevent mtrr errors. I have had zero problems, and x starts faster now too. _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.
