|
|
I've searched quite a bit but I haven't been able to figure out what's wrong. I have an Ultra 1 I'm trying to install gentoo on. I'm hoping someone here can help.
I know the installation is going to take a while on this machine but I haven't even gotten to that point yet.
I downloaded the sparc version of 1.1a and burned the iso to a cd that I booted off of the sparc.
From the boot prompt I typed ramdisk to start the installation (i gave vmlinuz a shot too just to see, with the same results)
It decompresses the files and creates the ramdisk but before anything starts to happen I get a Kernel Panic: attempt to kill init! (off the top of my head) message.
Anythoughts on how I can fix this?
thanks |

i think there is a thread somewhere about 'kernel killing init' _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |

Yeah, I read something about having to use the vanilla-kernel to resolve the problem. But how do I change that off the cd rom? Is there a different ISO I should download? |

yep - i'm not familiar with sparc - but i guess u can simply use an older installation cd, where the kernel works for you and then proceed to install the newest system - the system that gets installed depends on the tarball u use an not on the installation cd - there are also installation versions using other systems (knoppix and whatnot...) - basically the only thing u have to solve is the first boot as far as i understand the problem - if can get it to boot 'somehow' and can connect to the web u should be able to install gentoo... _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |
