I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with a ESS Maestro sound card. I have been attempting to follow the directions of this guide:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Gentoo_on_Dell_Insprion_8100
The guide is slightly vague in choosing the kernel options. There is an option to choose my sound card in the kernel as a Maestro3 but I can either set it up as a module or built-in. I am not sure what to do there.
But if I cannot get the emerge alsa-driver to install I cannot continue on the installation.
Am I overlooking a step?

I am going to give a shot in the dark here........
I am going to recompile the kernel with no sound support to see if that may fix the alsa-driver error. |

Ok I got it working. This is for ppl who receive the same error:
Use the alsa-config help document. Since my sound card is compiled in the kernel you cannot use alsa-driver. So you have to read the document to show you where to go next since it is already compiled b/c alsa-driver cannot be used. Once you find the right location you just have to follow the rest of the document.
No one pointed this out to me 22 hours ago. |
