i have my kernel compiled with the ati ixp module
using xmms and the
OSS driver 1.2.10 (libOOS.so) or alsa 1.2.10 (libalsa.so)
when i run alsamixer i can see all the level indicaters and adjust the sound
i can hear sound through the head phone jack
note the internal laptop speakers aren't working
kde cannot auto detect my sound...
infact it give me the error
"unable to start sound server to retrive possible i/o methods
only autodetection will be available"
and all other applications which i have tested including chromium and tuxracer and mplayer vlc have no sound
is they're a way to get the whole system to use the xmms sound plugins and how do i get my internel speakers working???

What kernel are you using?
The kde error is displayed at kde start or later? Have you used split ebuilds? Maybe you haven't installed arts?
Have you tried those other applications while xmms was already playing?
I suggest you to read the alsa howto on gentoo-wiki.com |

I have had similar problems, I got that same "unable to start sound server" error. I fixed that by installing arts. Arts did not install with kde as it did with my last system, not sure why. Once I installed arts I was able to configure my hardware to use it. _________________ Victor Matherly
