|
|
Whenever I load gnome2.2 from either gdm/kdm or anything it will bring up the loading screen(gnome-splash) and get to the second little icon and quit loading and just go straight to the desktop. It seems like it gets an error and just stops loading all other features, the icons are then missing and windows don't behave like windows they just load at the top left and other oddities.
Now the twist is this...
If I load gnome2.2 in failsafe mode it works perfectly fine and loads past the second icon on the intial gnome splash loading screen and finishes. And everything more or less behaves correctly.
What can I do about this? It was happening with the last version of gnome too! KDE and fluxbox work fine. When I view the description of failsafe-gnome it says something like, "used for solving problems in your installation, no startup scripts will be run. Is it a startup script problem? Oh do I hope that someone has a similar problem and comes to this thread packing a one step solution... |

you can find out if it's a config-problem by doing the following:
cd ~
mkdir gnome-conf-backup
mv .gnome* .gtk* .gconf* gnome-conf-backup
That will restore the standard-configuration of gnome and gtk |

Okay I typed in "metacity" at root in gterm and the once topicbarless windows now have topicbars and I can move the windows around but the output is what's important,
"Window manager warning: Failed to open a open connection to a session manager, so window positions will not be saved: SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined"
Is this a step in the direction I need to be stepping in? Help0r please!
Someone on another forum suggested that maybe it's failing to load metacity at startup? |
