When the cd boots it creates a ramdisk and stuffs a lot of files in there. That ramdisk then becomes the root filesystem. So, if you reboot everything in that was on the ramdisk disappears, since a reboot clears the ram.

Hi.

It's most likely that you download the files to the /root dir before doing the chroot. This means that you saved the files to RAM. When you restarted, the files were gone.
For anyone listening, the entire filesystem on the live-cd above /mnt/gentoo lives in RAM. Anything you copy there will be gone when you restart the machine. If you want to save files for later, put them under /mnt/gentoo, after you mount a disk partition there.

Does that apply even up to the step when we configure GRUB and restart? Because I have crashed on the GRUB install and now it seems I can't retrive any info...

it shouldn't. by the time you chroot in all your boot & root partitions would be mounted so you wouldn't be coping to a ramdisk anymore. if your having problems with grub its likely that you forgot to
Code:
cp /proc/mounts /etc/mtab

or when opening the grub.conf file:
Code:
nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf

you may have mistyped something and created a file other than the above.
i know it has happend to me a couple o times

also i never reboot until my gentoo install is complete just to make sure no problems come up.
