Ahh... It is difficult to name the best, but my choice is Masters of Magic (mom). It is the single most replayable game, that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time.

Next would be the Elder Scrolls, tied with Warlords II. (edit: I never played Warlords, and started with two, I think?)

All three of these are stragegy games. I remember downloading DOOM, when it was FIRST relased, through the Internet, while at The American University. So that's the first game I ever downloaded throught the Internet. HEY! A new post!

Edit: my first download was actually Wolfenstein, now that I think of it.

Anything on the original scumm engine would have had me (in those days) playing for months. Because I was so little it took me forever to figure that shit out. :)

OOHH YEEEAAAHHH.

Now I remember. Heretic was built on doom's engine. Damn fun. I never have played in Hexen.

Each of these should become a staple offering of Gentoo.

I agree with Aynjell, the LucasFilm Games/LucasArt adventure games (Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Zackary McCracken...) were really nice...

Definitely Doom. As for the scumm engine I love Full Throttle. Some other games that ate a lot of my time were:

Dune 2
Civilization
Master of Orion and MOO2
Sim City
Quake
Some of the Microprose games like F-117 Stealth Fighter and Apache
Quarantine
Street Rod

There are so many more that will probably come to me but these are the ones that really ate some time (especially Dune 2 and Doom.)

Ultima 7 and Star Control 2. Thankfully, both can now be played natively in Linux, in the guise of Exult and The UrQuan Masters respectively. :-) Personally I reckon both efforts have significantly improved upon the already superb original games. In SC2's case, with the addition of the voice acting (in the original DOS version of the game, all dialogue was text-only) by a long, long way.

Yippeyayhoo! PoP was a megahit! ;)

And the first sierra adventures (Larry and Space Quest). Instead of the unmotivated "I don't know how to use that" you get from indiana jones larry and the space quest guy would do *anything* (or die trying)!

Worms! And with regards to the sequels I quite liked Worms Reinforcements. On a related note, if anyone has a copy of Worms United check out the credits for the madcow level ;) (Anyone who used imagine might recognise the cow)
