I can't use grabdisplay in Xawtv with bttv driver. It did work before and I don't think I changed anything. When I switch to grabdisplay it causes the screen to go black, but I still have audio. I can watch tv in overlay mode but I can't go full screen without grabdisplay. I upgraded to xawtv-3.82 incase that would help, but it didn't. I may also try 3.83 for kicks aand report it to Gentoo stable.

Try this:

# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
EndSubSection

Change to:

# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
SubSection "extmod"
Option "xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
EndSubSection

(in other words... remove the "omit" from the DGA extension setup)

I have a similar problem:
xawtv works in overlay and grabdisplay mode until I watch a movie with mplayer or xine. After using xine/mplayer switching to grabdisplay mode in xawtv freezes the video. To get grabdisplay working again I have to reboot my pc.
I already updated xawtv, xine-lib and mplayer a few times and even switched from Xfree to xorg but the problem still remains.
