Hi!

This is what I did:

Code:

emerge -uDN world

After it completed, I found that sudo no longer works. When I run sudo, I get:

Code:
sudo: pam_authenticate: Module is unknown

It worked before the emerge. I looked at the emerge log, and saw these:

Code:
  >>> emerge (86 of 93) app-admin/sudo-1.6.8_p9 to /
  ...
  === Unmerging... (app-admin/sudo-1.6.7_p5-r2)
  >>> unmerge success...
  ::: completed emerge (86 of 93) app-admin/sudo-1.6.8_p9 to /

So it looked like the upgrade is successful. What can I do to fix this apparent broken dependency?

Thanks.
Albert

Couple of things left for you to do :D

1) Tell us how you solved it, that way anyone with the same problem could search the forum and look here for an answer

2) Add [SOLVED] to the title of your first post so nobody wastes their time coming in here to help you when you've already solved it, and so that people know they can look here for the answer

Cheers
Jim

Sure! I'm kind of embarrassed because it was a stupid mistake on my part. After emerge world, I inadvertantly let /etc/sudoers file overwritten. That's why the user was no longer a sudoer. But the situation was not helped at all by the stupid error message from sudo, which said "Module is unknown" and thus threw me wildly off course.

Hi all,

I known how utterly stupid this is, and I apologize. Yesterday I wanted to do an update on my server but halfway through it I stopped it (Ctrl-C) and went to bed. This morning I wanted to get back on to finish the update but ssh just told me that I could not log on (it connected all right but I was thrown off the system before doing anything) and when trying without the private-key log in it told me that I could not log in with password authentication.
Right now I'm sitting in front of the box, have connected to it with a screen and a keyboard, but when trying to log in with su it just tells me
Code:
configuration error - unknown item 'GETPASS_ASTERISKS' (notify administrator)

I can log in as normal user, but sudo doens't let me in either:
Code:
# sudo bash
sudo: pam_authenticate: Module is unknown

Any idea how I can fix it?

Fire it up with knoppix, chroot and fix it...

I had a similar issue and just emerged sudo with USE="-pam" or the like
