During the installation of Gentoo (2005.0, from a universal CD, stage 3), I wasn't able to setup a connection to the internet. I'm fairly comfortable with using Linux in general, but I have no experience with networks under Linux; I'm still used to the Windows way of doing things.

First of all, I think my system doesn't recognize my ethernet card. When I type

Code:
ifconfig eth0

I get

Code:
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

The ifconfig command alone only lists lo (loopback, I guess).
The motherboard documentation talks about the "VIA Rhine Family Fast Ethernet Adapter" (which I assume is the network card), and gives a specific driver for it. Following the instructions, I copied then compiled the driver, but got error messages in the process. I didn't know where to go from there.

An added problem is that I have an ADSL modem (which works fine with the Windows XP computer I'm using now), which can be connected either with an Ethernet or USB cable; with the Windows XP machine, I've always used the USB cable. The Gentoo documentation said to use adsl-setup for that, which I did, but then it asked me for the DNS of the ISP, which I don't have. After that, I continued reading through the documentation carefully, updating configuration files as was needed, and ended up with a "functional" system without an internet connection.

To test things further, I tried booting my system with the LiveCDs of Ubuntu and Slax. I'm not sure about Slax, but Ubuntu seemed to recognize the network card, and listed the modem as an unknown USB device when using the USB cable, and not at all with the Ethernet cable. In both cases, no internet connection was possible.

I'll try to sum up my questions here:

1) Is it likely that my computer doesn't recognize my network card?
2) Because I have an ADSL modem, I understand I should I use PPPoE, but is DHCP still necessary?
3) Am I going to have to call up my ISP and ask them which DNS to use?

Also, I have absolutely no idea what my modem is. The documentation only lists its general capacities, not its brand name.
If it can help, the Gentoo Linux OS I've just installed is the first one on the machine (no Windows XP before it), which is also a brand new computer.

I'm a bit confused about all the configuration files, and what has to be written in which... I guess I'm really a beginner. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm completely stuck now.

Thanks a lot.

Compile your kernel with [i]Device Drivers -> Networking -> Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) -> VIA Rhine support.
IIRC you can also use it when you boot with the live cd, you just have to enabled since it doesn't get enabled by default.

When you directly connect to the internet using PPPoE, you will be assigned an IP address, so you won't touch that.

The nameservers of your ISP are usually dnsX.ISP.SOMETHING (my ISP is telepac and so my nameservers are dns1.telepac.pt, dns2.telepac.pt, and so on)... Though, i don't know if when you use the adsl-start script it automatically sets those up for you.

If you use PPPoE, that's completely transparent, so you won't need to know that. Just get your network card working, and it will work like a charm. :)

Thanks for the advice! I've reinstalled the system, my network card was recognized, and I'm able to get on the internet through my ADSL modem.

So everything's working great!
Thanks again!
