|
|
Hello.
Last night I did am "emerge -uD world". This morning I came into my office, and seeing that the all the emerging was finished, I did an "emerge --depclean" and "revdep-rebuild". When I restarted the computer, and did "startx". Now, however, Gnome is no longer loading. Instead I have a basic Xterm windows. If I type "gnome-panel", I can place the top and bottom panel, but everything else is screwy. I looked at some other forum posts, but most seemed to suggest another round emerging. So, after an hour or so I
Code: |
emerge --sync
emerge --update --deep world
emerge --depclean
revdep-rebuild
etc-update
|
Unfortunately, this hasn't changed anything. Can anyone please tell me (a) what happened or what I did wrong, and (b) how can I fix it so that gnome come back? I haven't been using Gentoo very long, and this is only my second emerge -uD world, so this is a bit frustrating.
Many thanks!!!

What does "emerge -pv gnome" return?
If it doesn't return anything other than gnome-base/gnome, then gnome should still completely installed.
Also, check /etc/rc.conf and make sure XSESSION is uncommented and set to "Gnome".
Edit: "gnome" seems to need to start with an uppercase "G" _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

Hi, and thank you for the prompt reply!
Code: |
# emerge -pv gnome
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] gnome-base/gnome-2.10-r1 -accessibility +cdr -dvdr -hal 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 0 kB |
So I assume it is completely installed. As it turns out, XSESSION was set to "Gnome" but was commented out. I don't know why. Would the update world have done that? Anyway, I uncommended it and now everything seems to work pefectly, so thank you very very much.
What should I do to prevent this from happening again?
Cheers,

Just be more careful with etc-update.
rc.conf is a part of baselayout, which there was a major upgrade of recently, but it is a protected file so it should'nt have been replaced until you used etc-update and checked each file to make sure you're not losing any customizations.
Anyway, glad I could help. Mark as Solved? _________________ "You have to invite me in" |
