Well, in the spirit of the silly but fun best game/worst game topics, i thought I'd start this one up to see what other people liked.
For music/soundtrack I'd also include ambient sound effects, though that might be a special category as well.
The two that come to mind are:
The Neverhood for such an awesomely silly soundtrack that's unique and infinitely replayable (and available again from Terry Taylor's website)
System Shock 2, for ambient heebie-jeebies
What do folks think? _________________ This signature is printed with 100% post-consumer recycled electrons. |

My personal fav has to be the soundtrack to REZ. Though I do enjoy the soundtrack to JSRF a lot too. |

I second that.
Also, the GTA games all have absolutely perfect soundtracks, but I guess that comes from choosing music from the same period as the game's setting. _________________ War. War never changes. |

Need For Speed 5 has the best soundtrack. Underground 1 & 2's soundtracks suck. |

IIRC "Heart of Darkness" (a 2D jump and run) had a very nice Soundtrack (played by London Symphony Orchestra). |

Hmm... tough one. *ponders for ten minutes*
Homeworld was great, too few tracks though. So I'd go with Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask. The orchestrad versions are amazing just like the ones in the game. Occasionally I do hum the WC:2 soundtrack though. _________________ *User behaviour when your O/S isn't working properly*

I really like all the orchestrated Final Fantasy soundtracks and the Final Fantasy vocal collections. Anything by Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Xenosaga) is great too.

IMHO console RPG soundtracks are the best (Nobuo Uematsu,Yasunori Mitsuda, Motoi Sakuraba ...), but there are also a few occidental game OSTs that I like, especially the work of Jeremy Soule (Total Annihilation, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege, Icewind Dale....).
It's funny to note that Soule seems to be a fan of japanese composers too. In addition his first work in game music industry was with Squaresoft. |

I've always loved the NIN soundtrack to Quake I
I found myself often as amused by the talk radio in GTA than the music. |

Perhaps an odd entry, but the Dungeon Keeper 2 Theme. It kicks ass, even if it's only a minute or so long. _________________ Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis! |
