Hello

My internet was working fine, and then I recompiled the kernel. Now, my computer tells me that eth0 device does not exist, and it will not allow me to access the internet. What do I do?

Did you compiled the driver for the network card as a module ?

If so, check this:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/migration-to-2.6.xml#doc_chap8

If you are using a 2.4.x kernel, use /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4

How do I know if I compiled it as a module? Also, how do I know what the name of the module actually is?

If I use make menuconfig, is that a module?

The way you can tell if you compiled your network driver as a module is when you picked your network device during the
kernel configuration. If it showed an M it is a module if it shows a * it was complied in to the kernel.

You can look in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/drivers/net to see what network modules you have.
Make sure you replace <kernel version> your kernel version. It will probley be easier to cd to modules and
see which kernel version you have and go from there.

As far as the name of the module the only way to tell is when you configure your kernel. You can press ctrl ?
to get a help screen and it will usally tell you the name of the driver if compiled as a module.

Menuconfig is the gui version of configuring the kernel.

Hope this helps some.

Actually, menuconfig is the console menu version to configure the kernel. Both xconfig and gconfig are the gui versions to configure the kernel.
