I upgraded from a CD-writer to a DVD-writer. And it works fine on burning smaller files (400MB or so)

But I've got a set of files that I want to back up that total around 2.7GB - plenty of room on a DVD for that, right..?

But I get an error every time I run cdrecord-prodvd. And although the files are all apparently on the DVD and all the exact same size, most of them fail to work, with only one or two of the 17 files being readable (the last few to be burned).

I've tried using mkisofs with the split-output flag to burn the DVD from smaller files, but no joy. Is it the DVD-R's I'm using, or the drive itself, or the software..?

Install dvd+rw-tools or something like that. And use growisofs to burn your dvds. It's quite easy to use.
Recording DVD is as simple as :
growisofs -Z /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -R -J /directory/with/the/files

-Z means it's an empty dvd. There's another flag you can use to append .
