The Knoppix Installation section instructs the user to boot into a 2.6 kernel. However, the section that follows, "Installing Gentoo from an existing Linux distribution," mentions the author installed Gentoo from a Red Hat 7.3 host. Is it possible to install 2005.0 from a system based on a pre-2.6 kernel, or are these instructions outdated?
I'm trying to bootstrap a Gateway 2000 (486-DX2 80 MB RAM) into the 2.6 world (I saved three of these suckers from the dumpster). Despite using dozen cheatcodes, I haven't been able to boot into any of the 2.6 Live CDs (Knoppix, Debian, Gentoo). However, I can boot into the 2.4 Live CDs fine.
However, it seems the current Gentoo install instructions rely on using a pre-existing 2.6 boot to run some variant of,
Code: | mount -o bind /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc |
Is there some way to bootstrap this step, that is to accomplish whatever this does without a 2.6 kernel? Or, is this not a problem? I suppose I'm seeking a way to bootstrap Bob P's guide.
I suppose it comes down to whether the 2.6 kernel will ever support the old hardware or not. |

Hi.
I think I recall reading, perhaps in one of BobP threads, that if you want to use NPTL with a 2.6 kernel, you need a 2.6 kernel to be able to install 2005.0 - I think that it has to be more recent than 2.6.5, but I'm not sure. _________________ Jorge.
