Auto mount? User access to external hdds?

Hi,

I had encountered several problems with Gentoo I didn't have with other distros, so I guess my configuration is flawed.

Problem 1: iPod, external hdds, cd-roms are owned by root, and I cannot change ownership to users. At that I can run gtkpod, move files from cd-rom, desl with external hdd's only after I swicth to root though su. Kinda annoying an insecure.

Problem 2: I want it to be so whenever I put cd into cd-rom I would be able to see cd's contents in ~/cdrw. As of now I have entry in fstab that mount /dev/cdrw on /home/sanzen/cdrw, yet I have to swicth to root, run mount -a, and only than new cd will be seen in ~/cdrw. Also it wount let me take a cd out by pushing cd-rom button. I have to go 'eject /dev/cdrw' as a root. Quiet annoying...
I have almost identical problem with my iPod -- i have to unmount/eject it before i take it out, or database can be messed up (happened before), however when i put it back in I have to mount it manualy again.

any suggestions?

P.S. if its helpful -- in /mnt/ only cdrom (/dev/cdrw) and floppy show up.

What desktop are you running?
Do you have HAL, coldplug, hotplug, or ivman installed and/or running?

There are many threads on mounting and automounting, have you searched for any of them yet?
