Can anyone recommend an application for simulating up to 1000 computers accessing Web/FTP/misc UDP traffic, each with a unique MAC address? This would be used to test a gateway product. Would it be easier to create this on my own? |

Maybe something like

But from my experience, software on a single PC is not capable of simulating anything like that. Even a decently high performance PC can't produce pure output (on it's loopback address) more than a few Gigabits per sec. And when you plut a NIC in the play, that will limit you to a hundred Mbps, or a few hundred in case of Gbps NICs (I haven't seen full gigabit traffic yet from a gigabit card)
For really serious traffic generation you might need some hardware appliance, like this: http://www.phoenixdatacom.com/packetstorm-network-emulator.html _________________ "The future masters of technology will have to be lighthearted and intelligent. I actually tried that piece of software out, and it doesn't seem to do much more than simulate multiple connections from the same machine. I didn't like the interface either.
Idealy what I have is something simulating many MAC addresses accessing a web server on another machine. I could use the kernel packet generator but then I almost have to write a TCP stack on top of it... Ack |
