Thanks again to Deathwing00 for splitting this thread once more. The next patch will most likely be out within the next week or two, so I wanted to get this thread nice and clean in preparation. My apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced by this.

Just for updating the howto.

The last saturday I updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers 7664 (they support now opengl2) and compiled the last wine version (20050520). This version didn't need to be patched as it seems to be already applied.

There weren't any problems in the compilation (using and amd64 with multilib, x86 usually has a lot less problems compilating wine) and didn't need to touch anything to play again.

This wine version seems to have fixed some memory management problems because it hangs a lot less now (also because I use qt ui macros, without it or cosmos wow's rock solid)

No problems with the new patch as of yet. Just do it without any glitter and it should run fine.

In other news, the only instability that I have been able to find with WoW is that it crashes your system when run in conjunction with Azureus.

I was running 03102005 (or 20050310) - the version from the install guide...

It gave me that prior error -

in the interim today, I ran emerge update - and it looks like it updated wine to 20050419...

Is there a newer wine I should download? or should I recompile the 20050310?

I'm getting a few crashes and really poor performance at the moment. The crashes seem to be related to fonts or sound although I am sure that I have all sound turned off in WoW. What do I need to make sure no sound is being used in wine? This was happening before the patch also.
Here are the error messages:

Code:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x77cb7b3c "DSOUND_mixlock" wait timed out in thread 0012, blocked by 000f, retrying (60 sec)

If I manage to log off before it crashes, I get:

And just now this error:

New patch up and running with latest wine build in portage (I got tired of building from CVS) and the latest nVidia binaries. Many major UI mods are in various broken states thanks to changes made in the patch (and no, it isn't just the build/date stamp).

Now if only the Horde would come and play BG with us.. :P

Use at least wine-20050524 if you don't want to worry about patching the source yourself. It contains all the required WoW OpenGL stuff that Raphael implemented.

Hi.
I want to install World of Warcraft on my gentoo system, but I have a little problem. I downloaded the latest wine version and built it with the install tool.
If I want to install WoW (wine /mnt/cdrom/Installer.exe) it says I need a Windows version. In this case I had no config.
With a downloaded and little changed config I get following message
Quote:

Sorry, the Installer was unable to start. You may be out of hard drive space

There should be more than 100GB of free space so it is maybe a problem with the wine config:

Roff you build it witgh the install tool?
Which one is that emerge?

Now my guess is you have everything onj windows xp. Try win98 for a change. I bet that you will run in much lesser probglems with that version activated.
If that still does not help try to see if /tmp is fiull. if that is not true too. I will have to think hard since i had this anoyance too and solved it somehow. but I cant remeber :(

Cham
You still have the 290fps problem?
lol. I learned a lessen at my military service which everyday proofs it truth:
Quote:
who reads has a clear advantage over others.

But of course that does not solve your problem yet :)
What did opengl-update say when you tried to change to the ATI GLX stuff?
And which drivers have you installed? (I am not sure I have asked this already. So I decided to ask it again, just to keep the information which are in your case important together) :D

Beholders_Eye
Of course you got problems. You forgot to add -opengl when started wow.exe

All the rest.
Umm. If you have problems are unsure how to patch I have put a similar Howto on the Wikipage. I still think it is a great Idea to use that page as a patch base since we all can add surething advices to that one. here comes the link. Please check that side out to. maybe you find a solution to your problems there. (Or you could add that article if you solved a realy anoying problem or if you have certain news on the soundproblem :) )
Link:

Ohh, I just saw. Thanks to all who corrected my bad english and keeping track of it. Keep it on buys!! :D

Cheers legine

@legine: I tried all 3 install methods. from portage, install tool and installing by hand. Nothing worked, but I solved it with the help of Winetools. Pretty nice tools. Another problem is I can't umount my cdrom while installing, but I didn't try umount -l or -f yet. Maybe this works

I am realy tired. So take my apologies for any typos...

I know. the unmount command does not want to bc it says a programm is accessing it. right?
I simply ignored it and switched CDs anyway and it workes flawlessly with the installation of Arcatera.
Now if your open button of the CD drive is deactivated you should try unmount the lazy way... (-l) since the mount command reports the unmount when the program ask again...
That should work.
On the other hand you could copy all disks in one directory and then push the install. In case of wow it should go. I have installed the beta that way ( Thought: On a windows box).

Also had this problem, switching to the latest wine (20050524) solved it. No patches needed to be applied.

@Darckness Thanks for the great work (applies also to the wine team :-)

I think I didn't clarify everything in this post, sorry for double-posting, but I'm trying to make this game work for a month already :). I'd like to thank deeply our comrade ( :D ), Darckness for his restless efforts. Well, I just said that a I got a minimap bug, but I didn't specify what setup I'm using...

- Wine-20050524 with no patch applied (I've even tried to patch, but I've checked the source files and as said, the patch is already applied :) )
- I'm using prelink and NPTL.
- I've installed wine and WoW following the howto. It's patched to 1.4.2.
- I'm using kernel DRI/DRM with Xorg 6.8.2.
- I've tried morph-sources-2.6.11-r9, and lately vanilla-sources-2.6.11.10 (with reiser4 and fbsplash/vesa-tng patches)
- glxgears and glxinfo works and give me decent fps: 250~270
- ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]
- I don't use ati-drivers, as I read that it's not working for this old ATI video card... If I'm wrong, please notify me :)...
- In case it's not clear enough... I enter the game, I can even hear sound (with nice -n 19), I create an caracter, a just can't login, after the loading screen it give me the minimap error below...

Umm. I do not have a ATI Card so my knowledge is limited in that field. But GLX gears of 250 or 300 is nothing. I have around 2000 fps on my Gforce 4 which has a accept abel performance of max 28 fps od WoW.
I guess you may need to make sure if the 3D accelation is set up correctly.

Have you tried the ATI stuff of the Howto? (On the bottom in the Cadega section)

here a tip for your ATI setup to check (they go to all what can be done to check 3d accelation :) ):

Everyone: Try the newest release of wine. It should work significantly better than the March version. If people report upgrades without issues, I'll update the howto to reflect that.

Personally, I use the latest cvs build which I update no more than once a week, but usually something like once every two weeks. Naturally I do backups so that I can revert if something goes wrong.

hehe.

Now I have a little problem. Peatch 1.5 broke the game.
I just got the error:
Something gone wrong. Please reinstall the game.

Just great. The installer did not even bother to say what has gone wrong. :(
Reinstalling the game now.
(the update of 160MB sucks :( )
Hopefully it will work. But until now the install looks fine :)

EDIT:
Any Ideas what this failure caused?
Any one with the sameproblem?
