Hi all!

I've been searching through the forum and google to see what are the differences between those two... I want to try Gnome but don't know if I'm gonna like more Gnome-light because maybe that's what I need. But I just don't know what each one brings or not...

Could anyone help me? Sorry if this has been asked before; I continue searching...

Thanks!

Gnome is "the full package", Gnome-light, as the name implies, is a stripped down minimal version, without the extra fat :) I'm lazy and thus just install the gnome metapackage to get the "full package".

Thanks, but... Am I gonna miss any functionality?

Well... I think I'm giving a try to gnome-light and then see if I upgrade to full gnome or not.

Thank you!

If you want to know exactly which packages that differ between them simply compare

Code:
emerge -p gnome

with
Code:
emerge -p gnome-light

and then you can check out the description of all packages you don't know what they are.

it will be missing things like Gedit, Gnome-games...,ephiphany (thank god!!!) that can be induvidually emerged by themselves.
Gnome-lite is core GNOME stuff to get everything working and customisable, GNOME comes with everything else

I personally think gnome-light is the best way to go. i did not want to complile evolution or epiphany for example. I think if I remember right all I emerged after was hal and a few system tools and administration tools.

Hello everybody!

Well I think I've made a great decision!!! I love gnome-light... It brings all that I wanted from Gnome without having to support all that extremely bloated stuff... Thank you all.

I have some problems I trust to find a solution, like:
1. When I say amule to go to minimize to tray icon it leaves the icon in top-right corner of gnome, where I can't understand why... (in the screenshot)
2. It seems like Gnome takes more than what my screen represents... I mean, if I put icons on the right side or the left side they're "cut" and seems like the desktop is a little big bigger than what I can see through the screen... (you can see this also in the screenshot).
3. How can I remove the icons of the mounted units? It puts them in the workspace automatically and I don't want them there but I can not manage to remove them.

I have some other minor errors... but this are the most important. If someone can help this poor guy a little bit more...:P.

Thanks to all of you!!!

1. I haven't seen that behaviour before, but I guess it's related to that you don't seem to have a notification area on the panel. Right click on the panel, select "Add to panel" and add a notification area. Restarta amule if it doesn't work right away.

2. That is something you will have to live with. The grid on the desktop makes it possible to place icons too far on either side. You will simply have to move it one snap to the left. Or if you don't need the grid, right click on the desktop and uncheck "Keep aligned", then you can place the icons anywhere you like.

3. Go into Applications->System Tools->Configuration Editor. There you go to apps->nautilus->desktop. There you can uncheck "volumes_visible". This will make them not appear on the desktop, but you can still see them in "Places" and in "Computer".

Thank you!

For the amule icon... yes, I had to add the notification area to the panel.
For the icons alignment... well, as you say, we'll have to live with it.
I didn't have de Configuration Editor (it doesn't come with gnome-light I guess), so I emerged it and then could remove the icons...

All solved!

Thanks for everithing, I'm delighted with my new Gnome :).

Well, he's missing applications - but not Gnome's core features ;)
