I have been using gphoto2 to get pictures from my digital camera ever since I got it 6 months ago. As of yesterday, I cannot access it.

gphoto2 can detect what camera it is, but I cannot connect to download the pictures. I can do it as root but not my user id.

Don'tknow what happened. It worked all along.

What should I check for?

I wasn't in the usb group before, but I did add that yesterday when I was trying to get it to work.

groups=5(tty),10(wheel),11(floppy),16(cron),18(audio),19(cdrom),80(cdrw),85(usb),100(users),250(portage),500(burning),501(tomcat)

Code:

gphoto2 --get-all-files > _foo 2>&1

*** Error ***
An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'): Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not perm
itted). Make sure no other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is using the device and you have
read/write access to the device.

For debugging messages, please use the --debug option.
Debugging messages may help finding a solution to your problem.
If you intend to send any error or debug messages to the gphoto
developer mailing list <gphoto-devel@lists.sourceforge.net>, please run
gphoto2 as follows:

    env LANG=C gphoto2 --debug --get-all-files

Please make sure there is sufficient quoting around the arguments.

I'll try the "camera" group in /usr/share/doc/libgphoto2-2.1.5/linux-hotplug/usbcam.group

Ah, I believe this might be it.

Hi all,

Well, I finally got around to trying the solution that I thought would work and, lo and behold, it did work.

So, here is the quick and easy way to do it:

First, copy the version of the usbcam script that is based on a camera group into the /etc/hotplug/usb directory. Gphoto should provide this:

Code:

cp /usr/share/doc/libgphoto2-2.1.5/linux-hotplug/usbcam.group /etc/hotplug/usb/usbcam

Next, create the camera group:

Code:

groupadd camera

Finally, use whatever text editor you like to add your user to the camera group in /etc/group.

After that log out and log back in. The camera should be up and working again for the users in the camera group.

If anybody wants me to post the actual script, just let me know, but, as I said, you should have it if you emerged gphoto2.

Best,

Alex
