I am doing a new install on a laptop (This is about my 8th Gentoo install on various machines, so I'm not a total newbie).
I'm following the 2005.0 handbook which mentions creating the symbolic link from /usr/share/zoneinfo to /etc/localtime. Well, I don't seem to have a '/usr/share/zoneinfo' directory to find a timezone file in. I've looked at the stage1-x86-2005.0.tar.bz2 and there doesn't seem to be any files in there either. Could I have missed a step?
Thanks in advance,

Are you sure you are checking inside your chrooted environment and not on the livecd?
If you are looking in your chrooted environment check if your md5 checksum is correct:
Code: | md5sum -c stage1-x86-2005.0.tar.bz2.md5 |

| iirc they are in the stage3 tarball. With a stage 1 install they are created by emerging glibc. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered

Indeed, those files are generated during the regular stage1-2-3 process. |

ok, I think I may know what was happening... I was trying to do a Stage 1 install and it looks like the Handbook is geared towards doing a Stage 3 install. This is an 'experimental' laptop, so, I'll just stick with a Stage 3 install and start over.
However, some designation may want to be added to the handbook indicating that the instructions are for a Stage 3 install.
Thanks for the help!

There are quite a few references to this in the 2005.0 handbook. Especially in the first two chapters. |
