We've got a fresh install of Gentoo on a Dell D800 Laptop. The laptop has a NVidia GeForce 4 Go FX5650 128MB card in it.

We've tried both stable and unstable versions of the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx (6629 and 7667). Both packages emerge without errors and the nvidia module modprobes without incident. Ran opengl-update nvidia without problems. System is running 2.6.11-gentoo-r3. lspci shows the device with BusID 0000:01:00.0. The system will launch X using the 'nv' driver, but performance is unacceptable.

Regardless of our efforts, this is what we get. To me, it appears that xorg is completely ignoring the driver we've provided:

It seems the X server is ignoring your config file... Do you have a XF86Config or something like that that might be overriding your xorg.conf?

If not, try mkxf86config. It will provide you an acceptable default xorg.conf that you'll be able to modify and work on.

Module names are case sensitive and the rest is supposed to be case insensitive.
I saw in your xorg.conf that you use NVidia and nvidia. Try to use different names.

I was curious that Xorg might be ignoring the configuration file, so I put an intentional typo into the Device section for the video card; it detected the error and kicked out before trying to initialize any drivers.

I've tried various names for the video card, the current iteration is something short and sweet to ensure there are no typos.

This configuration was generated by xorg.conf with hand-editing to change the driver; I just cut out all the comments to save space. I didn't check for other configuration files, I'll do that when I get into the office tomorrow.

I'll post more when I try that. Thanks!
