Hi all

I would like to install Gentoo but I’m curios on which ISO to download? I’m running a PC with Windows XP which is an OS I would love to ditch, but I’ve also used Mandrake for about a year.

Is there a full install ISO I can download? I’ve seen so many folders on the ftp that I’ve become dizzy.

So can anyone help me out with this problem?

:?: :?: :?: :?:

well, that all depends on how much you would like to compile from source, what your system specs (cpu type) are, and so forth.
so, tell us....

I don't mind compiling from source but I also don't want the hassle of downloading everything off the internet from a boot disk.

So I was just curious is there a full install ISO?

I'm using an AMD Duron 1Ghz processor, 512 SDRAM, NVIDIA Geforce 2, Audigy Sound Card, 40 gig hard drive.

well, there are livecds with a bunch of packages precompiled if that does not bother you. they are for big things such as X, KDE and OO.
for that, go here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/1.4_rc2/x86/athlon/livecd/

or, for the livecd to compile everything from source, go here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/1.4_rc2/x86/x86/livecd/

for the last one, you WILL have to download things. you could also dowload the latest portage snapshot and burn that to a cd and insert it when you need those packages. i believe that will work.
for those, go here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/snapshots/

well, good luck and welcome to gentoo!! :D

hmmm, the last idea i gave you (about the portage snapshot) was wrong, but the first should work.
just make sure you read the latest install docs on how to install the precompiled packages (they are call GRP's)
here is the link to the doc:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml

your welcome for the help :D
