A friend of mine has an Elite Group K7S5A motherboard with an integrated nic.

The nic is a Sis 735 chipset. The livecd correctly detected this card and I had networking to install gentoo, but now that it's all up and running, we can't seem to find the appropriate kernel module. Any help?

If I go to the website of the manufacturer I can find
----------------------------------------
Driver Name SiS 900 LAN driver
Version 1.16b
Release Date 2003/03/28
Update Description SiS 900 LAN driver
Special Note CD 2.4s

Under
-------------
K7S5A(1.1)

don't know if that's exactly your model though.. but
--> Therefore I would suggest you try using the following modul in your kernel:

--- Networking support
Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) --->
< > SiS 900/7016 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter support
