I just put Gentoo 2005.0 on my laptop. After following all the instructions and rebooting, everything seemed to work fine, so I ran an emerge --sync. The last few lines warned me that I should update portage to the latest version. Unfortunately, I no longer had internet access. Now when I boot up, I get:

Bringing eth0 up via DHCP... [!!]
Bringing eth1 up via DHCP... [!!]
*ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
* "netmount" was not started.

I think I know why eth1 (wireless) is failing, but right now I'm more concerned about getting my wired internet connection working again. Anyone know what might be going on here?

To say the obvious, it looks like it cannot find a DHCP server. Do you have one on your network? Maybe you should try using a static IP, at least until you get everything updated. The install docs talk about how to setup networking using a static IP.

- Make sure your cable is plugged :P (this has happened to me)
- Make sure /etc/conf.d/net is empty (try running latest baselayout... ?)
- run an ifconfig and see if your interfaces show up, or if they show at all.
- You say you have a laptop... Is it wireless? Do you have two ethernet adapters?

If you had it working during installation, it HAS to work... ;)

Try entering in a console:

Code:
 # dhcpcd eth0

Then try to ping something from the console:

Code:
# ping -w 3 www.yahoo.com

If you get a measured result, you're in business. I don't know why, but I have to kickstart mine with that command now and again. I had wireless configured, but reinstalled jackass!, and haven't finished it yet. I have a Prism54 (Intersil Prism GT/Duette/Indigo) card on my ThinkPad, and there is a documented problem with that particular card and DHCPCD connections, but I haven't had time to check out the resolution yet.

Make sure it is installed with an "emerge -p dhcpcd". Next, "rc-update -s". net.eth0 should be loaded as default. If it worked during the install then it is something you have/have not done. As a last resort you can rebuild your kernel with genkernel, but I would try loading the module manually, and then pinging a web site. That should work.

I brought the computer home and plugged it into my home network to find that it connected without a hitch! I now suspect something funny about my office network. Thanks for all your help.
