Hi,
I seem to run from one problem into another.
I'm able to watch the manpages with the konqueror and there
all umlauts and the sharp S are displayed properly.
But when I browse a manpage from the console I do not
get these special characters displayed.
my locale is:
LC_ALL=de_DE.utf8
LANG=de_DE.utf8
In every other programm ( till now) I do not have problems with umlauts.
Are the manpages differently parsed under X than under console?
What do I have to do to get the umlauts shown with man under the console?
- I took a look at SuSE 9.1 and set the locale to de_DE.utf8 and the german manpages where
displayed correctly. But they use man-db which uses a different database.
Any help appreciated!

"Console" meaning "konsole"? If so: Settings->Encoding->UTF-8; the default is probably wrong.
If console means the one with CTRL-ALT-F1, you need to set UNICODE="yes" in /etc/rc.conf and maybe select a compatible font... well there's various howtos for utf-8, even german ones I think. |

In my case it means both.
Well, the problem is that I do have a utf8 aware consolefont
and I do followed the gentoo utf8 guide and had a look at
many utf8 threads in the forum.
Only man don't shows the special characters
E.g. when I type 'dumpkeys --help' I get german help with
umlauts and sharp S.

| man uses $PAGER to display the text. Maybe your $PAGER has got issues with some or all unicode chars? |

It was worth a try.
But changing the pager from 'less' to 'more' doesn't change anything.
I also realized that 'man --help' has problems

but less is much more powerfull than more. Does anyone has a patch for less?

Maybe it is because of your locale.
I think that X-apps generally prefers de_DE.UTF-8 over de_DE.utf8
Appearently that also goes for less 
from man less | Code: | If neither LESSCHARSET nor LESSCHARDEF is set, but the string "UTF-8" is found in the LC_ALL, LC_TYPE
or LANG environment variables, then the default character set is utf-8. |

You're right if I set my locale to de_DE.UTF-8 less recognizes
that it should use UTF-8. I think I followed a thread in the forums somewhere
where they said locale should be de_DE.utf-8. But it seems that less only recognizes
*.UTF-8 but not *.utf-8. I think this should be improved to avoid such problems.
I'm a fool, I should just have followed the utf-8 doc. Looking at /etc/locales.build also indicates
that you should use *.UTF-8 but not utf-8. You're always smarter afterwards, but people who can
read are in advance

I've just checked and less does recognize "utf-8" as well as "UTF-8" (at least for cs, Czech locale), but is having troubles with "utf8". So please use de_DE.UTF-8 as the name of your locale.
